Sleeping Disorders

Children who tend to watch a lot of television have always shown dismal performance in school. This clearly comes out when this particular child displays poor grades. Watching too much television tends to make one narrow-minded, because that is the only gospel he/she knows of. There is no thinking outside the box meaning there is no room for innovation either. Another issue that arises from the effects of television is eating problems. People see all kinds of food on television, and suddenly they want to have every taste of it. Regardless of whether this food is to be healthy or not, that does not matter to them at all. The result is, obviously, obesity. No wonder one of the biggest challenges in the developed countries in the twenty first century is obesity. This again is thanks to the television.

Some children are developing sleeping disorders. This is mainly due to staying up extremely late at night watching television. This behavior most likely leads to the changing patterns of sleep for the child. The time when they are to be awake during the day is when this particular child is struggling with sleep. The alertness that the kid requires in the classroom is not there and he/she starts getting poor grades.

Television is not entirely disagreeable as there are some excellent aspects that may come out of it. There is actually the bright side of it. Television is put to use as an entertainment tool and in other cases it is for educational purposes. Television gives us the chance to travel round the globe without necessarily moving physically. We get to learn the different cultures that exist and more so we get the possibility of gaining exposure to different ideas that we may not otherwise experience or encounter in the immediate environment. There are some programs that have aspects of positivity and these have got a positive influence on viewers. They encourage viewers in making positive changes in their lives.

There are more ways that television can influence personality positively. Recently there has been the increase of subliminal videos on various topics in the media industry. Majority of these have a design to reach the subconscious part of the brain (Plotnik & Kouyoumjian, 2011). In fact, there is scientific proof that these images get to the brain and stick. Once there, they will influence the way we behave towards certain stimuli or situations. For example, if one watches a video on how to develop a positive attitude. There is a high likelihood that the perspective of this particular person will change with time as they continue watching this video time after time. That is the explanation of how powerful television can be. The brain is a truly vital tool when it comes to the personality of any given individual. That is why anything that we see keeps popping up when we think of it. Constant thoughts lead to it engraving into the mind and ending up becoming a part of the personality.

Another aspect of on positive influence is that many people are developing their speech delivery skills just by watching other renowned orators speaking. They try to   emulate the body language which includes the dress code also. By keenly following television speech gurus’ actions, the leaner becomes better and better at the art of speaking. They build their confidence and the thought of standing before a crowd does not give them shivers anymore. This particular person changes entirely in terms of the way he/she even interacts with others. We all know that there is no other better way of learning than learning from others. Television has proven this age old truth. Some people are learning a whole bunch of foreign languages just by picking bits of it from television (Hoffman & Ebrary 2001).

Not everyone would want to go out in the wild without having been told how it would turn out. This gets even better when one gets a chance to see beforehand what to expect. There have been incidences where some people refuse to go on an outdoor adventure like safari. This quickly changes when these individuals get to see channels like national geographic, which has different programs that feature ways of life of different animals. It normally portrays an adventurous side of wildlife that tends to appeal even to those who are skeptical about the whole idea of safari (Tracy, 2003). Within a short time, we may witness someone who does not have an outgoing kind of personality turning to become the most outgoing person around. This person may even suggest going round the globe, because they want to experience everything that they have seen on television.

Watching such shows as natural geographic on television also changes feelings towards wild animals. Some people fear giraffes or even elephants, but after constant viewing features of such creatures, the personality tends to change with time. We discover that they are not so dangerous after all. This applies to those persons that have the phobia for animals. There are cases where people who have a history of poaching transform into animal activists as a result of watching television shows that encourage conservation of nature.

Regarding behavioral change, there are programs on television that focus more on crime. These shows go ahead to show step by step how one may commit a crime. For example, a program, which is showing, how to rob a bank. After one watches such a program, it convinces them that robbing a bank is okay and extremely easy. It portrays bank robbery as something normal that can always be embraced when one wants to get rich quickly. People, who have a tendency to watch these programs start developing criminal minds, hence may not hesitate to practice what they see on television, because they believe its okay.
