The Burial of Jesus

Free «The Burial of Jesus» Essay Sample

Brown poses questions about the background and identity of Joseph because it was considered a daring act for Joseph to offer to go against the tradition and take up a roll of torching and burying a condemned criminal. Joseph had been said to have been a secret disciple of Jesus and from this understanding, this triggered Brown to ask the question.

Joseph of arimathea was the man who gave out his own prepared tomb so that it can be used to burry Jesus after his crucifixion. This is as per the four gospels. He was portrayed as a secret disciple of Jesus Christ. In Mathew he is described as a rich man and also a disciple of Jesus. In John, he is said to be a Jesus Christ’s secret disciple. He is also described as a member of Sanhedrin and a wealthy counselor.

According to the tradition of the Jewish, Jesus was said to be a condemn criminal who did not deserve to be buried respectfully. It is for this reason that He was buried on Friday which is a day before the Sabbath. According to the Jewish tradition, a condemn criminal was supposed to be buried in Court Tombs. Jesus being a condemn criminal, it was unclean for the Jewish leaders to touch his body. This explains why it was Joseph of Arimathea to bury him. It is also clear from the gospels of Mark that there was no special coffin prepared for him had it not been for Joseph of Arimathea’s own coffin. The tomb in which Jesus was buried in tells it all that according to the Jews tradition, Jesus did not deserve a decent burial.

Jesus trial and his burial was so unique because there was differences between the Jewish and Roman condemnation. The High priests, the Sahedrin and the scribes all of whom are Jewish elders were for the opinion that Jesus be crucified and killed. On the contrary, the roman governor (Pilate) did not find Jesus guilty, and therefore tried to release Jesus But the Jewish elders objected (John, 2000). This made Pilate to beat Jesus beyond recognition in satisfying the Jewish leaders. However, the Jewish insisted that he be crucified. Pilate was therefore compelled to give an order for Jesus to be crucified. The burial of Jesus Christ was also unique in the manner in which it was conducted. It was Joseph of Aramathea who voluntarily prepared his tomb. He had to be buried on Friday to avoid interfering with the traditional Sabbath day.

The omission might be because it might not have found it necessary that a Roman soldier could check the body of a criminal considering that Jesus had been condemned and said to be unholy.

A according to Brown he argues that this verse was added by redactor to make verse 46 be preceded with verse 43.
