Following advancement and development of imaging technology and navigation techniques more anatomic studies on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) anatomy reconstruction have been developed. Progress in ACL reconstruction technique and procedure has received an increased attention in the anatomy field. This has followed the ongoing restoration of the native anatomy which is crucial for achieving reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament. Clinical outcomes are not reliable; they are considered imperfect since the graft placement of ACL is not placed in an anatomic position. The main advances in the imaging technology or techniques have been aided by the move from two-dimensional image analysis (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) image view. This has in turn led to more understanding in human anatomy which has then led to more advance analysis of ACL.
This article attempts to introduce some of previous research studies conducted on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) anatomy and how the analysis has been applied in ACL reconstruction and analysis. Using the 3D imaging technology technique ACL graft can be placed accurately on the crucial bony landmark required. The 3D-CT technique further provides a better and consistent analysis evaluation than other conventional references and quadrant roentgenelogical techniques or methods. Basically, the human anatomy is associated with a complex 3D structure and further analysis and research studies on human anatomy using the 3D imaging analysis; navigation of this system in clinical application including other invented technology gives an assurance and more understanding on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction anatomy.
Thee-dimension imaging technology application in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) anatomy and its clinical application to the human navigation system has laid the foundation for more reliable, consistent and perfect anatomic studies related to the original ACL and ACL reconstruction technique and procedure.
Applying the navigation system and 3D imaging analysis and the rising attention on anatomic procedure and techniques accompanied with more advance technology of computers is leading to the development of strong motivation for computer and robots assisted surgeries which could give a more reliable real time imaging analysis feedback on individuals anatomy information to surgeons and doctors during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
